What Can We Learn From Kevin Costner’s Divorce? Insights into Marriage, Homesteads, and Rumors

What Can We Learn From Kevin Costner?

I’m clutching my pearls over here! Kevin Costner’s wife, Christine Baumgartner, recently filed for divorce from the Yellowstone star after 19 years of marriage. Baumgartner is citing geographic locations as one of the main reasons for the split. It turns out that the cowboy drama films in Utah and Montana, while Baumgartner and their three children live in California.

So, what can we learn from these distant lovers?

Insights into Homestead Claims

I reckon we can learn about spouses claiming homestead. Can one spouse claim homestead on one property and the other spouse claim homestead over yonder in another property? The answer is yes, Florida law does allow for spouses to each get their own homestead property. But hold your horses there, two separate homesteads are a rare exception, and the multiple homestead exemption must be proven by applicable facts. For example:

  • The couple must show that they really live apart by having different drivers license addresses.
  • Keeping their personal effects in the different properties.
  • Providing different voter registration locations, etc.

It’s not as easy as one would think. Many families own multiple homes for either investment or as a secondary, vacation location, but most families only have one residence that the family calls “home.” Qualifying for two homesteads in one family is not an easy task y’all.

Lessons on Marriage

So there you have it, buckaroos, we learn that distance does not always make the heart grow fonder, and while you may have a separate homestead than your spouse, it’s not as easy to prove as one would hope.

Shall we end there? Heck no! While this newsletter is educational, it’s also a bit gossipy. And my sources tell me that there is an alleged baby out of wedlock allegedly provoking the Costner divorce. However, no one else seems to be picking up the story, and this newsletter is always above-board LOL.

Should there have been an adulterous (love that word) baby, I was fixin’ to discuss the FL statute regarding “half-blood children” (yes, that term’s still in use in 2023), but, alas, that’s for another newsletter. In short, this newsletter is not one to spread idle rumors. No siree!
